Theories of development: from modernisation theory to neoliberalism. Many countries instituted policies which were aimed at keeping demand high. State had a big role in this, modernisation theory emphasises the role of state in developing countries. It suggested athat all countries move through similar stages. Developing world can catch up with the west by pursuing similar policies. (open markets, industrialisation etc) 5 stages by rostow: traditional society -> preconditions for take off -> take off -> drive to. Criticisms: claims to be an universal development theory. Assumes that countries want to become mass consumption societies" and ignores other development prioroties. Suggests that poor countries can adopt the same path as rich countries. Ignores the colonial policies that allowed the currently right countries to grow on the back of cheap available labour. Emerged from latin america in 1960s and 70s. Un"s economic comission on latin america played a key role- Attempted to explain the failure of development in the global south.
