We don"t know much about it"s it is believed to have originated in the far east approx. It has been mentioned in many religious books (bible) so it must have been very prevalent during that time. Believed to have spread to the mediterranean area and europe from far asia. In europe there"s evidence of diseases in bones dating back to 500 and 700 a. d. Traditionally it was recognized as the disease of the soul : earlier thought to be a hereditary illness, or caused by a curse or by punishment from god. It was believed that those who had sinned had contracted the disease because of the sins they had made.
