Differentiated small scale vs large scale societies. Came up with the notion of collective consciousness : system of beliefs shared by avg members of societies. Societies can be categorized , small scale societies : less individuality , more cohesion, feel bonds because people are similar to each other, often based on kindship. Organic solidarity : attributed to modern industrialized societies. Social cohesion would not come from peoples similarities but will result for economic interdependence.
