Franz boas (1958-1942) was a key figure in developing a 4 field approach in anthro. Emphasized the importance of gathering detailed empirical data in person. Believed that it was crucial to record as much as possible about people around the world, especially of the aboriginal people, because they were disappearing. He took a very holistic approach, looked at socio-cultural aspects of people"s lives. 4 field approach is a contrast to what is found in europe, where the 4 fields would be found in separate departments.
