HLTB22H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Mannose, Integrin, Immunoglobulin M
Document Summary
Immune system is designed to get more and more specific with the response it provides to pathogens that manage to get through the first barriers. External/internal environment: protected by exterior layer skin, only certain areas that we interact with external environment. Lymphatic system: much easier to get into the lymphatic system than to get into blood system. Very porous: lymphatic system knows this is an easy access area. Very good at carrying the fluid that may have pathogens to get surveyed by. Pathogens activate the immune response guard cells: any microorganism that is diseases causing. Will cause a disorder/disease: bacteria, viruses, fungi. There is no one size fits all when we attack a pathogen. Not even all viruses are the same as each other. First line of defense: chemical barriers. Really well evolved to strategically exclude pathogens: epidermal layer. Minimize the chance of anything getting in. Looking for pathogens that might have got through.
