Public health emerged in 19th century as social reform and increased biological knowledge. Elements: decision making based on data and evidence, goal of social justice and equity, focus on populations and not individuals, emphasis on prevention rather than treatment. Goal of public health: concerned with health issues that affect many countries or are affected by transnational determinants or solutions. Determinants of earths carrying capacity: availability of fresh water, amount of arable land, availability of fuel, amount of technological and biological waste. Developing countries: high birth rates because there is still a need to have big families for economic purposes, do not have access to contraception. Crowding and urbanization: last sixty years, theres been a lot of people living in cities. Impact on public health; water and sanitation services struggle to keep up because they are not able to combat it, and traditional lifestyles disrupted. Climate change: global warming through use of fossil fiels, deforestation.
