Document Summary

In observational design, you as a researcher do not intervene at all. Only in an experimental study do you intervene, such as a rct. In a cohort study, you don"t intervene, experiment, or assign groups. In cohort studies you follow the group over time, and have to wait until the outcome shows itself. Entire cohort of people is made up of people who don"t have that disease. In case control, you"re recruiting people who have the disease and asking them to remember what previous experiences and behaviours that led to the disease. The major distinguishing factor is that in case-control you"re asking to remember the past whereas in cohort you look towards the future. Use of health statistics: identify high risk groups, detect new threats to population health, plan public health programs, evaluate public health programs for their effectiveness, prepare budgets for government. These are things like birth and death certificates.
