Finally the ultimate partnership, made up a number of villages and having already attained the height, one might say, of self-sufficiency this is the polis. It has come into being in order, simply, that life can go on; but it now exists so as to make that life a good life. Consequently each polis is a natural thing, if that is what its constituent associations are, for it is what they are leading up to; and for a process to reach its consummation is only natural. What each thing is when fully developed, this we call its nature be it a man, a horse, or an oika. Besides, the reason why anything exists, its destiny, is its chief good; and self-sufficiency is the best destiny of all. There are countless singular institutions that eventually come together as a part of a process.
