Wilderness landscapes" sanction and prohibit the presence of particular social groups. There is no such thing as wilderness as conventionally understood. What is understood as wilderness is a social construction. The meaning of wilderness shifts historically with different social meanings attached to various landscapes. The focus on wilderness continues to inform the goals of the mainstream environmental movement. Wilderness is untouched by humans to be created.
