Extermination camps: closed organization of buildings with crematory and gas chambers - made with distinct goal of killing everyone. Paratext: anything outside the text proper (ex. Anti-semitism was the main platform for hitler"s political scheme. Also targeted the disabled, political prisoners, roma, and gays. Innovative through graphic novel form and from the use of trauma and storytelling. Post-war period - believed that the only way to portray the holocaust was through facts only (no embellishment) Also believed they could never truly portray the horror of the holocaust. Spiegelman had a tough time with the idea of making money off of telling his story - it"s barbaric to write narrative/poetry about the holocaust. We could never know what the war was really like, so we know what we"re reading is a representation.
