Document Summary

Factors affecting runoff: watershed size, generally, greater streamflow for larger watershed, runoff takes watershed into account (streamflow does not, topography: Runoff usually occurs in direction of land slope, which is perpendicular to contour lines. Biggest effect is on velocity of flow. High elevation to low elevation (with some deviations: shape: Circular (fan-shaped) watershed tend to have high rates of runoff because flow from various parts of watershed tend to reach outlet at similar time, but high rates shorter-lived. Water shed delineated by where it is measured. Circular = high rates of flow because distance form anywhere within watershed to stream is approximately equal. Elongated = flow may take longer to reach stream. Water travels to two key places: stream and to point of measurement: aspect/orientation: Aspect: direction major hillslope is facing (n, s, e, w) Orientation: major axis direction of basin (east-west, north- south, etc. )
