EESA10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Allergy, Smog, Bronchitis
Document Summary
Case study 1: london in 1952 it was colder than normal, so they started to heat their homes more, almost all heating systems at that time used coal. Cold air heavy and stayed there, didn"t move very much, no wind. All gases from coal burning also stayed in that stagnant air. Smog became so thick after some period of time. People felt they were choking by the sulfur gases, and it"s soluble in water and so causes burning sensation in throat. All of that combined and because of different weather, accumulation of sulfur gases was huge. The critical time was between december fourth and december tenth. Wherever there is a peak in sulfuric gases and smoke then also peak in deaths. Air quality in london much better now, many birds and other small animals came back to that area which were completely removed during the london smog time.
