Radiation and human health: background radiation: from the ground & space (we cannot control, manmade radiation: electronic products (x-ray machine, x-ray diagnostic, television sets, microwave ovens, etc. ) Short wave lengths and full of energy, very harmful, most research has been focused on ionised radiation. Many decades we"ve been told non-ionized radiation has not been very harmful, new discovery shows that even new energy waves may cause some significant impact. Ionised radiation: high energy, strip electrons from the atoms and change the charge of the atoms. They can also break chemical bonds in biochemical. Teratogenic: prenatal impacts on fetus, most sensit. in 8-15 weeks of pregnancy. Cancer: undamaged growth of cells (passed from parents to child, reason for cancer can be genetics) Cancer is a disease in which cells multiply without restraint and carcinogens are factors that cause cancer: initiation, promotion, progression mutations cascading cell division = malignant tumor. Our organs cannot distinguish between radioactive and nonradioactive forms of element.
