Document Summary
Human health and environment - lec 5: radiation (radionuclides) and human health. Two kinds of radiation: background radiation and manmade radiation: background radiation. Natural radioactivity in the earth and by cosmic rays from outer space. The majority of radiation of earth (82% of all radiation) Found in: electronic products, x-ray machines, x-ray diagnostics, television sets, microwave ovens, radar devices, lasers. Two kinds of man-made radiation: ionized and non-ionized. I. e. ultraviolet, x-rays, cosmic rays radioactive material that decay spontaneously produce ionizing radiation. Short waves and high energy able to strike atom (biomolecules) and able to remove the electrons and change the valence state of molecule (create two charged ions) Alpha rats, beta particles, gamma rays and x-rays all differ in the amount of energy they have. Ionizing radiation can produce two different kinds of health effects: stochastic and non-stochastic. I. e. affects someone working 30-40 years using equipment that releases radiation. Increase in levels of exposure make these effects more.
