Based on pressure difference, air moves from high to low. From flying we see that lift is possible from the bernoulli"s principle. Provides lift that enables an airplane to rise or a sailboat to move forward. Dominant mode of transportation (trade, military) in the mediterranean. Square sail limited maneuverability - downwind sailing. Lateen sail (triangular on a boom) provided more options such as sailing against the wind - imported from arab mariners. Moveable boom, typical of lateen sail enables flexibility in sailing in virtually any direction. Combination of sail orientation and keel board dictates boat direction. Wind energy directly converted to end use. Evolved from windmills in late 19th century. Charles brush of cleveland creates first wind turbine (1888) 144 rotating blades ( wind rose"), 18 meters in length. Heating of the atmosphere from sun"s energy. This natural wind flow or motion energy when passed through wind turbines is used to generate electricity.
