Sailing used to be a dominant mode of transportation in the mediterranean and china for trade and military purposes. Ships were used by norse sailors who relied on polar easterlies and mid latitude westerlies. Christopher columbus relied on the trade winds and the westerlies. Bernoulli"s principle : the pressure gradient force gives airplanes or other flying objects such as birds a lift underneath the wind. The speed of the wind above and below the wing is different causing a difference in pressure.
