Document Summary

Lec 06: february 8, 2016 the death of oceans toward the next supercontinent. India collides with asia after 25 million years closing the tethys ocean and creating the. This changes global climates and results in ice ages of the last few million years. Pacific rim of fire": involves widespread subduction and melt of pacific ocean crust below surrounding continents. Subduction creates new continental crust resulting in growth of continents through geologic time and creates natural hazards around the pacific rim, and their effects on cities. Outer margins of ocean plate are dense and thick and become too heavy and begin to subduct back into the mantle creating a subduction zone (sz). This consumes ocean floor crust faster than which it is being produced at the mid-ocean ridge. This pulls the continent towards the closing ocean (green arrow) and eventually closes the ocean. The slab-pull is rolled back so after it widens it starts to narrow.
