We look at the modern day analogue, we earn form these analogue and we go back to the very highly deformed rocks and we use what we learn to predict the ancient environment. That"s what geologist do: plates of planet earth is about 2 dozens of these plates but these are lithospheric slabs which are moving over the asthenosphere.
