In 1868 japan decided to modernize brought in westerners to design buildings roads, railways, factories, they tried to become more westernized. This earthquake 1891 destroyed a lot of the westernized buildings. Japanese learned that their older buildings were more sustainable than the western. Earthquakes produced by movement along fortes, at the time thought produced by the weather. Also came up with idea of seismic gap, areas on earth that haven"t experienced earthquakes in quite some time and therefore dangerous. Earthquake of 1891 big deal vertical and horizontal offset.
