Catastrophism major natural events that happened in the past that dictate a lot of earth"s history. Passive margin not a lot of earthquake activities. Active margin lots of earthquakes and volcanoes. It also sits under a plume, which is pushing up the mid ocean ridge and the island and heating up the rocks. The country is high in latitude (the higher to latitude the colder it gets). There are volcanoes buried under ice caps. It is the only island that gets bigger every year because it sits between the north american and eurasian plate. ** the two plates are pulling apart (relative motion), but they are both moving to the west (absolute motion) Major fractures where rocks are sliding past each other. Allow spreading centers to occur on curved surface. There are shallow earth quake epicenters along the transform fault (along shallow brittle crusts)
