Document Summary

Eesa01- lecture 2 - matter, energy, and the systems approach in environmental. All material that has mass and occupies space. The law of conservation of matter: matter may be transformed from one type of substance into others, but it cannot be created or destroyed . Example: what happens when oil spills in the ocean. Oil might attach to particles and sink to the ocean floor. No matter what happens it might be burned off or sink to the bottom of the ocean. Atoms are defined by the numbers of protons -> defines atomic number. Atoms with the same number of protons, but different number of neutrons = isotope. Neutrons give different mass, which makes atoms behave a little bit differently. When atoms gain or lose electrons, they become ions. Isotopes have different mass but same element behave relatively the same, have different bond strength. Polar molecule, with net negative charge at one end and net positive charge at the other.
