Augustus governed through traditional offices: consul, tribune, princeps (first of all equals), pater patriae (father of the fatherland) Augustus never took the title of king or emperor , instead he masked. Associates his rule with mos maiorum his power by turning down one-man rule: he said he was following customs and restoring traditions associated all new laws with the customs of ancestors. Not really true because italy always built their empire based on war how they conquered but augustus always said everyone sought friendship with rome, rather than war. Romans only used army when absolutely necessary not true: pax romana = pax augusta. He stressed peace is his goal and his achievement. Only what augustus wanted people to know about himself. Augustus augustus fought against them and won symbolized parthian submitting to romans. Statue of augustus represents him as an idealized young man barefoot like greek gods are.
