Claa04 lecture 11 - the christian empire and late antiquity (337-650 ad). What"s going on up to 3rd century ad: 161-166 ad - major war between the romans and parthians. Romans won battles in the east, in mesopotamia, but brought back a plague. 165-180 ad - invasion of germanic tribes through the alps. Leads to alliances and people settling in the north. 200 ad - big change when the gods move in. 238 ad - goths attack rome and it"s devastated. 253-282 ad - lots of confrontations and invasions, which were difficult. From the north african area of the empire. Septimius severus and his army fight them in and he comes out on top. Also fought the parthians in asia and made a new roman province, mesopotamia". Created new legions and raised soldier pay and benefits. He reduced the metal content of coins to deal with this. 213 & 214 ad paid off barbarians to not invade.
