CITC14H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Combined Sewer, Rexdale, Ecosystem Services
Planning for Ecosystem Services
Population of the world over 8B ppl and live in urban areas - need to make environment
more sustainable while having less of an impact
Ecosystem - a dynamic conflict b/w plant, animals, and microorganisms -- all forms of
life, native, … they include all kinds - farms, forests,
Services we can get through ecosystems - benefits provided by ecosystems species
Ecosystems services are all the goods and services human take from -- such benefits
that should include to all living organisms including plants and animals, not just humans
What do we get from ecosystems?
● Provisioning services -- things like food, wood, medicine, energy,
● Regulating - waste decomposition, crop pollination, climate regulation, disease
control, water filteration
● Cultural services - aesthetic, spirtual, personal growth, leisure and fun -
Urban biodiversity
● Services = putting a value on something
Values
● Use values
- direct values: raw materials
- indirect values: ecological functions which maintain and protect natural and
human systems
- option values: the premium placed on maintaining ecosystems for future
possible uses, some of which may not be known now
● Non-use values
- existence values: the instrinic value of ecosystems regardless of current or
future possiblities

Ecosystem Services
Ecosystem functions - Nature’s services
● Ecological functions occuring in nature as a result … these are functions of an
environment
● What they provide us:
● Piorpitizing certain ecosystem services in the urban environment
