Document Summary

We started talking about the organization of the ns, particularly the major types of cells in the ns, especially the neurons. Bioc32 lecture 3 that other major cells in the ns, the neuroglia. There are more of them compared to neurons in the ns, but they"re much smaller than the neurons. This makes equal volumes of neuroglia and neurons. Recall that the original thought of the neuroglia"s function was to hold the ns together, but that"s not the case. They have a wide variety of functions in the ns. Figure: let"s talk about the neuroglia in the cns. One of their functions was to secrete various chemical compounds that inhibit the growth of axons, such as nogo (which is the reason why we can"t have axonal regeneration due to the complexity of the ns). Furthermore, they"re important for synthesizing myelin sheaths that surrounds many axons.
