He managed to isolate microorganism to pure culture: he established link between bacillus anthracis and anthrax by passing the microbe through cycles in vitro (ox eye solution) and in vivo (mouse). Cannot show direct causation, only correlation: solution: inoculate aqueous ox eye humour (culture media) with the bacillus anthracis and grow for generations. He also decreased virulence: pasteur: used animal models. Saw that cultured bacteria healted the rabbits: nightingale: poor sanitation (doctors brought germs to the area). Wash hands: john show: found cause of cholera (sewage, jenner: mild disease (cowpox) caused protection against fatal disease (smallpox, problem with rabies: was a virus with single stranded rna genome of minus configufation. This could not be cultured at that time and vaccine couldn"t be produced: ultimate proof for germ theory of disease, in nature, microorganisms grow in complex mixed populations. It stays solid at higher temperature than collagen and also indigestible for many organisms.
