These categories are formulated according to people"s bodies and deine characterisics such as intelligence, aestheics, values, and understandings of social phenomena. Racial classiicaions have been used to raionalize colonialism, slavery, genocide, and ongoing inequiies. This does not mean that it must remain so. And unstable and decentered" complex of social meanings constantly being transformed by poliical struggle (p. 55) Racial categories are not stable and can change across ime. Diferent groups can work to challenge racial formulaions but may be hindered by the power of dominant rhetoric. However, not all changes must happen across the broadest scale and they may be able to make changes within the in-group. A concept which signiies and symbolizes social conlicts and interests by referring to diferent types of human bodies (p. 55)
