Speciation occurs, even though the species are in the same geographical space. You have one continuous population, through disruptive selection can diverge into different species. Fruit flies, remain genetically distinct, with some choosing to lay their eggs on apples and others choosing to lay their eggs on hawthorne. We have an ancestral population, and it was subject to stabilizing selection. The larvae developed at the point where the fruit was the most ripe. You end up doing equally well on both hosts. In the past, individuals near the center of the fly distribution do well on hawthorns but individuals who mature early do not do that well on hawthorns but they might do well on apples. There are other individuals in the population that don"t do well in any case. We have selection favouring two different average values in the population which is known as disruptive selection.
