Document Summary

Used to determine location of satellite dna. Satellite dna : large arrays of repeating, non-coding dna. Dna of the chromosomes is kept in place while it is left to react with a particular preparation of labeled dna. Shows that dna is localized in centromeric regions of the chromosome. Gene duplication: duplication of small portion of a single chromosome. Thought to often be produced by unequal crossing over. Occurs when a pair of homologous chromosomes come together during meiosis so that that they are not perfectly aligned. B/c of this misalignment genetic exchange b/w homologues causes one chromosome to acquire extra segment of dna duplication & other chromosome to lose a segment of dna deletion. If duplication of particular sequence is repeated in subsequent generations cluster of tandemly repeated segments is made at a localized site within that chromosome. Majority of gene duplicates are lost through deletion or rendered nonfunctional by unfavourable mutation.
