Document Summary

There are about 30 million species of organisms (living things) on earth. Only about 1. 75 million species have been identified and named. Organisms that are similar in shape and structure and mate freely with one another to produce fertile offspring are grouped into one species. Common names of a species differ from region to region. Binomial nomenclature was proposed by carolus linneaus (18th century) The first name is a generic name (genus: a group of closely related species) The second part is the specific name of the particular organism. No two species have the same scientific name although they may share a common genus. The genus name shows a very close relationship. The language generally used in scientific classification and naming is latin. Latin is a dead language and is not subject to change. Scientific names are often chosen to describe an organism, its range, or to honour a person. Mangifera indica origin - tamil "mangai" | indian.
