Document Summary

Plants do not want to be fed on. All non-plants depend directly or indirectly on plant food: every plant is under constant threat of attack (herbivory) Herbivory: most widespread plant-animal interaction, often least visible, especially insects are feeding on plants day and night, ex. Plants do not want to eaten so they have mechanical defense (tissues and organs) and chemical defense (plant secondary compounds, toxins) Primary and secondary compounds: primary compounds = products of photosynthesis, protein synthesis carbohydrates, proteins, starches, cellulose essential to normal cellular function and life in general, secondary compounds = products have no known direct function in basic metabolism. Herbs and spices are produced by plants to be toxins. Secondary compounds = products have no known direct function in basic metabolism. Induced defense is turned on when herbivores attact: systemic defense is always on o, physical defense: mostly systemic, chemical defense: often induced. Systemic physical defense: thorns and spines. Has hooks to cling on: trichomes.
