Male blue gourami defend their territories from other males by rapidly swimming at intruding males with all fins erect. If the intruding male does not back down, the encounter escalates into a battle in which both fish risk serious damage. Males that respond more quickly to intruding males are more likely to cause the intruder to back down without a fight than ones that are caught off-guard. The ability to detect cues is instinctive in these fish, as is the aggressive defense of their territories when an intruder is present. Na ve male fish, when exposed to the chemical cues of a potential intruder, are significantly more likely to be caught off-guard than experienced males. Very experienced males will respond aggressively to cues alone, without ever seeing an intruder.
