Plant Nutrition and Soils
•Basic plant needs => if we took a plant, dried it, removed all the water, we would get the
following graph.
◦96% of the nutrients are
accessed through water
and carbon dioxide
◦Every other nutrient is
taken up through soil
▪4%
▪Macro-nutrients: the
top group (need lots)
▪Micro-nutrients: the
bottom group (less)
•Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorous (NPK) are the most important macro-nutrient limiting
factors, sold at every plant store for the benefit of a plant
Nitrogen (N)
•Essential building
block of life, basic
metabolism,
presence in proteins
and photosynthesis
•Nitrogen cycle
Phosphorous (P)
•Promotes early plant
growth (meristems)
•Flowering/fruiting
•Hardest to take up,
very reactive, not
very bio-available
•Essential for ATP,
NADPH, DNA
Potassium (K)
•Production of sugar
and starch
•Increases size and
quality of fruits
•Cation, bio-available
Nitrogen,
Potassium,
Phosphorous
