Document Summary

Lycophytes were much more adapted to life outside of water. They had a cuticle, a thin waxy film outside of their bodies to seal in water and prevent water loss. The stoma is seen in more evolved plants angiosperms and gymnosperms. In middle of stem there is a specialized cell called phloem cells which help with sugar transport from the green tissue into the plant. In the centre is a small number of zylem cells which specialize in water transport. Clubmosses typically grow in the understory of our forests and these can be found in canada. Quillworts smallest group among lycophytes which all live at the bottom of lakes. Spikemosses largest group, both club and spikemosses have the biggest diversity in the tropics. Larger group within plant tree of life with 12,000 ferns. Whisk ferns very primitative with only 2 species. True ferns big bulk of ferns found in this species, 12,000 species.
