Document Summary

Many techniques exist that allow us to specifically modify the sequence of a gene or piece of dna e. g. reverse a mutation in a gene to restore normal function. Most exciting tool = crispr/cas (cid:862)clustered regularl(cid:455) i(cid:374)terspaced short pali(cid:374)dro(cid:373)ic repeats(cid:863) Derived from prokaryotes, they used to use this as an immune system. The spacers perfectly match the gene of a virus that previously infected the bacteria. This immune memory uses the copied virus gene to create a target attack next time the same virus appears. Method to introduce dna into our cells. One dna in (a) codes for two things: enzyme that carries out this process, cas9, and specific. Cas9 has to work along side a rna template called crispr rna. The rna sequence is complementary to the target sequence in the genome. Crispr guides cas9, cas9 will cut the dna causing the cell to want to fix it.
