Document Summary

Complex, with precise spatial organization on several scales. The ability to change in response to the environment. The first law of thermodynamics: energy cannot be destroyed but can be transformed from one form to another. The second law of thermodynamics: the degree of disorder in the universe increases. Energy is required to create order and entropy is the amount of disorder. Atoms combine to form molecules, held together by chemical bonds. Covalent bonds, when electrons are shared between two atoms. Polar covalent bonds, when bonds linking two atoms are polar, with a partial positive charge on one end and a partial negative charge on the other. Ionic bonds, involves the losing and gaining of electrons. Water is able to resist temperature change in order for its temp. to increase, hydrogen bonds must first break. Water resists temp. changes that would result from biochemical reactions. Nucleic acids: dna, rna, both of which are genetic blueprints.
