Document Summary
Speciation: the process that produces new and distinct forms of life. Species: difficult to define the word species as it is something that is changing over times. Species, are real biological entities not just a convenient way to group organisms. Species must be able to exchange genetic material by producing fertile offspring. Biological species concept (bsc): species are groups of actually or potentially in- terbreeding populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups. Members of different species are reproductively isolated from one another. Actually or potentially takes into account that members of the same species may be geographically isolated from one another and therefore not able to breed. The bsc is more useful in theory than practice (difficult to test if species will breed and produce fertile offspring) Morphospecies concept: members of the same species usually look alike. Extended to the dna level > similar dna sequences. However, there may be polymorphisms-species show different phenotypes.
