ANTC17H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Anterior Inferior Iliac Spine, Orrorin, Iliac Crest
Document Summary
Feature 1: foramen magnum positioned further anteriorly than australopith. Feature 1: foramen in great apes magnum positioned further anteriorly than in great apes. Feature 2 (curvature of the spine) Foramen magnum is positioned more posteriorly (back) than seen in humans. This allows the spine to fall more horizontally backward. Less curvature: thoracic and sacral regions concave anteriorly. Wolf magnum positioned further anteriorly than in great apes. Feature 2: multiple curves of the spine thoracic and sacral regions concave anteriorly. Also seen in great apes cervical and lumbar regions convex anteriorly (lordosis) australopith. Feature 1 (position of the foramen magnum) further anteriorly (front) than seen in great apes. This helps the spine project vertically downward. The ischium projects dorsally, this gives the hamstring muscles a lever when the hip is extended (needed for strait posture and gait). Presence of an iliac pillar and anterior inferior iliac spine.
