Document Summary
Black gold: what are challenges to coffee production in ethiopia, there"s no insurance for agriculture. It is a risky enterprise because a lot of money is invested into it. In canada, if a farmer loses their crop to frost, they are covered by insurance. Up until the 90s, there was an agricultural extension office in most communities, there were extension workers who deal with farmers to help them improve their crops, offer new experiments on fertilizer, etc. You can"t just remove the people and have it function the same way: the main character of the film was a salesman. A huge part of his job was to travel, make connections, remind people about his coffee by giving free samples, etc. Building these relationships with people is crucial to selling coffee: at the village level, the producer must trust the buyer.
