Document Summary

Whenever they were overcome with grief, they had headhunting parties and ceremonies; once done, they felt much better. Rosaldo tried to understand the logic behind headhunting, to translate it; but he could not understand and therefore struggled to translate it. Only his own experience (his empathy) could translate it viscerally (through feeling, not logic; physical feeling almost) No, it was simply emotional, could not be understood, only felt or not felt. Briggs essay: when you spend time with people, their cultural practices shape how you feel things. At times, you have to feel something yourself in order to truly understand it. We shouldn"t assume a symbolic depth to cultural practice (not everything is universally felt) Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar -freud. Meaning that sometimes we just need to take things at face value rather than trying to go extremely deep into the subject to find hidden meanings.
