They explore how people use language: language is unique to humans. But animals do have a way of communication but they are not languages. There is no society or culture without language: languages are systematic and arbitrary. Arbitrary because there is not system between the words and sound. The pronunciations are randomly assigned: language is an open ended system, people can create new words, sapir-whorf hypothesis (language relativity) - demonstrates the relationship between language, culture. Stronger version = people think and speak differently. It indicates there is no interaction with languages and social groups. It emphasizes the differences but not the similarities. It represents other cultures in a: creole languages = a mix-match of different languages.
