Contentious politics use of disruptive techniques to make a political point or fulfill an agenda: episodic (series of loosely connected events), public and collective, collective political struggle. Involves interaction between makers of claims and others, is recognized by those others as bearing on their interests, and brings in government as mediator, target, or claimant. Not all of politics is contentious: politics are ceremonious, have consultation, bureaucratic processes, collection of information, registration of events, etc, ex. Military service, voting, paying taxes, attending public meetings, etc: takes place in internal social relations. Two types of contention: contained and transgressive, contained. Innovative = incorporates claims or objects of claims, includes collective self- representation, and/or adopts means that are forbidden within the regime. Forms of contention: social movements, revolutions, strikes, nationalism, democratization. Different forms of contention result from similar mechanisms and processes compare dynamics of each form to understand.
