SOC446H5 Lecture 4: Lecture 4
Document Summary
Ditton used hughes principle of seeing people"s lives as normal, because that is the way they look at it. Fiddling: a way to steal from customers. People gradually realise that what they are doing is criminal. Pressured to rip off customers: notion of part time crime. Connection to shover"s criticisms of criminal career- gradually going into crime. Not people who deliberately chose this path, rather it is a factor due to various contingencies. Ditton focuses on part time crime, but shover was focused on full time criminal career. Book has theoretical intentions rather than empirical ones: to explain theoretically how fiddling (which is a criminal offence) can simulatenously be fidlling (that it practically and psychology trifling) . It can be seen as not so serious or criminal. Their full time job is legal and this is just some thing that they do on the side: makes fiddling ordinary.
