SOC384H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Corporate Censorship, Mass Media, New Media
Document Summary
Be able to distinguish between profanity, indecency and obscenity and how fcc governs it. Canada does not proactively tell broadcasters what kinds of content qualifies as such (they only answer to complaints) Obscene materials banned in both canada and us and governed (both by fcc and crtc) Corporations can censor others not through legal power but by economic power. Economic power can be channeled through litigation and withholding advertising. Litigation when businesses see negative comments posted about them by individuals that can be identified, they will threated to sue (liable) Probably wont win a sue like that not a crime what happened to you at a restaurant (served you cold food) But going to court is a huge hassle so its easier to remove the post than deal with law suit. When people know about the possibility of being sued there is a chilling effect where they are less likely to post in the first place.
