SOC380H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Hijab, Glass Ceiling, Second-Wave Feminism
Document Summary
Brief historical background: human communities form groups of hunter gatherers, mostly egalitarian bands, mostly matriarchal (lecture by b. jensen in this course and the first nations in canada). Because these groups are uncertain (if we hunt today, we might not have to tomorrow, etc. ) These groups tend to be egalitarian (in terms of gender, race, etc. ) Matriarchal structure (matrilineage) means children and family are affiliated with the women"s family, the person in charge of socializing the children is the uncle on the mother"s side. Matrilocal societies, meaning that the man moves into the woman"s house, etc. Women did things (governing bodies) that are typically men"s work". In terms of sexuality/gender, they were not looked upon as lesser/looked down upon for being sexual beings. All band members help in the upbringing of the community"s children: having discovered agriculture (past 7,000-10,000 years)- first settlements, the notion of property, labour division between men and women, tribes, chiefdoms, civilization (cities), mostly patriarchal.
