SOC345H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Intentionality, Masculinity, Queer Theory
Document Summary
Particular type of body means something about gender and expression. Decouple these things from one another, be cautious that masculinity is not always attached to a particular type of body. Expected behaviour over a certain type of person. Queer theory in general, is about moving away from categories. Push to have someone identify with any one category in terms of gender or sexuality. Question the categories, move away from them. Way of thinking own identity as fluid. Norms are our rules for behaviour, expectations that govern. Expectations for how someone is meant to behave and exhibit their gender. Normative assumptions become expectations compelled to fulfill. Shake up template that they have to fulfill a particular category because of the body they have. Their expression is non-normative, get the idea from other people who are trying to make sense of them. Not respecting that masculinity and femininity are two categories. Trying to be more male, something that they are not.
