Document Summary
Aboriginal peoples, people of colour, immigrants and refugees tend to be underrepresented. Hollywood has portrayed first nations and inuit in stereotypical terms: Sterotyped issues include simplistic characterization, romanticizing of culture, and stereotyping by omission showing first nations in a historical > modern context. There is a stereotype that first nations lie on reserves when in fact only about 25% do, and a slight majority now live in urban areas. There is an assumption that indigenous people somehow have an intuitive knowledge of their culture and history, when the degree of such knowledge varies greatly depeding upon the family and community connections of each individual. Today, first nations are perceived as becoming rich because of gaming revenues. By dehumanizing her, its not traditional clothing, able to degrade her. Stereotypes totem poles don"t exist in many places not by tradition. Totem poles created and erected for each clan a person for each. To hand down knowledge has a story behind it.
