Status and non- status is the govt deciding if you are indian enough. Terminology created by govt, not because we wanted but govt needed way to talk about indigenous. Native, indian and native can is pop terms used until the 1980"s but no aboriginal, indigenous, first nations, metis, Inuit"s, bands and communities some of these are legal or self defined. First nations have been brought forwards by the first nations. Do not use savage native indian red skin or eskimo etc. Eskimo is a derogatory term, means meat eater. Band is term used to talk about community. Aboriginal is term used to refer too abnormal. We need to use proper terms in order to create a better r/ship today. Indian act really broad and govt decides who is and isn"t indian. Dakota pipeline is going to ruin water supply.
