SOC310H5 Lecture 6: SOC310 S1 L6
Document Summary
Soc310 l6: intersectionality of youth justice schools, peers, gangs. Michael brown: shot by police in ferguson, another reason why we study school is because we question how people enter the cjs, schools exist for particular people and they"re not all equal to people. However with new government this act is implemented differently across ontario: we are interested in understanding school and cjs interactions. This question is based on a social context but expects answers to be equal and the same for everybody: sometimes schools fail which is why they also look at schools. They look at how class assumptions are reproduced in schools and we have a rigid, authoritarian, power structure. This makes going to school less desirable: you could have more egalitarian teaching models so instead of people being talked at, they"re engaged more. Research shows if they like going they"ll attend more often so engagement is key.
