SOC275H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Hegemonic Masculinity
Document Summary
Reading response 1 (week 2: explain these two key terms: hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity. The term hegemonic masculinity may be defined as the ideal way a man should be or should act; this term outlines what it means to be a man and how a man acts. Although, the definition of what it means to be a man may differ from one culture to another, the term hegemonic masculinity is still upheld as a model for all men in any given culture. This term, in my view, is an exaggerated form of what men do or how men should act in our society, what a man should and should not do. The term hegemonic masculinity exaggerates masculinity amongst men. Hence, according to this term, a man is someone who is dominant, physically strong, mentally strong and financially stable, with good looks.
